Discription:
Located in the center of an automobile traffic circle inside the grounds of the Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery, the overall memorial consists of several parts. The front of the circle, facing west, holds a reddish-colored tombstone-styled memorial with the engraving, “Dedicated to military veterans lovingly buried here by families and friends and to those homeless veterans who have been forgotten and buried without recognition or honor. ‘They served us then, we honor them now.’ Donated by those who care.” The memorial also includes two depictions of eagles in flight with two American flag depictions behind them. As one walks around the circle, there are plaques installed in the ground. Each one is engraved as follows: (1) “In honor of those who served the United States of America in time of war. Presented and dedicated by the ex-service organizations of Clark County, Nevada. November 11, 1939.” (2) “Dedicated to the men and women of the United States Air Force who made the supreme sacrifice and to those who served our country with honor and dignity.” Includes an engraved Air Force logo. (3) “Dedicated to the men and women of the United States Navy who made the supreme sacrifice and to those who served our country with honor and dignity.” Includes an engraved U.S. Navy logo. (4) “Dedicated to the K-9’s that have served our armed forces.” Includes an engraving of a military K-9. (5) “Dedicated by the veterans’ organizations of Las Vegas in memory of their fallen comrades of all wars ‘called to a higher service.’ 1947.” (6) “American War Mothers. History:
Woodlawn Cemetery, consisting of 40 acres, is a cemetery located in Las Vegas, Nevada that is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. It is owned by the City of Las Vegas and is a stop on the city’s “Pioneer Trail.” It houses the Veterans Circle that commemorates the service and sacrifice of Nevada veterans. The cemetery opened in 1914 on 10 acres of land and was designed by J.T. McWilliams. At the entrance to the cemetery grounds, there is a plaque that explains the cemetery veterans connection: “Opened in 1914 on ten acres of donated land, the cemetery was the unofficial veterans’ cemetery until 1989, and is the home of Veterans Memorial Circle. Woodlawn Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.” (Note: the cemetery grounds hold two additional veterans memorials that are described and photographed separately.)
