Veterans Memorial Hall
carson city, nv
Discription:
Veterans Memorial Hall. (NOTE: the name “Veterans Memorial Hall” is generic and used to identify buildings in several cities and states across the nation. This one is located in Carson City, Nevada).
A brick and concrete two-story building. Signage on the side of the building identifies the name of the building and the names of the recognized veterans’ groups that use the facility. A smaller metal sign near the entrance states “Veterans Memorial Hall.” While not associated with the career of State Architect Frederick J. DeLongchamps, the National Humane Alliance Fountain provides a visual focus for the placement of the DeLongchamps’ buildings. The simple granite fountain is a rare Carson City example of the type of civic improvement associated with the early twentieth century, city beautiful movement. Veterans Memorial Hall, which adjoins the rear elevation of the Heroes Memorial Building was constructed by the Nevada Department of Highways to house their Materials and Research Laboratory. The structure reads as a distinct building from the Heroes Memorial Building and is not associated with Frederick J. DeLongchamps. The National Humane Alliance Fountain and the Veterans Memorial Hall are not contributing elements to the nomination of the Heroes building to the National Register, but for years the structure has served as an honored location for Northern Nevada veterans organizations and individuals. State governors and other elected officials have made pilgrimages there to visit with and honor Nevada’s veterans.

The structure was built by the Nevada Department of Highways. A water fountain on the property was a gift to Carson City by the Hermon Lee Ensign National Humane Alliance, originally dedicated on Labor Day in 1909. Constructed for use by horses and dogs, it was restored in the 1990s by a grant from the Nevada 125th anniversary Commission and the efforts of past Buildings and Grounds Director Terry Sullivan.
