The T-62 began development in 1958 and was the successor to the T-55 tank. It was produced between 1961 and 1975, It contained the world’s first smoothbore tank gun, which became a Soviet standard. The 115mm main gun had a greater muzzle velocity and nearly twice the range of similar rifled barrels. It has a short service life in the Red Army and was rapidly replaced by the T-64 and -T-72. The T-62 was used by Iraqi forces during the Iran-Iraq war as well as in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. It has an initial range of 450mm, with a 650mm range with two extra fuel tanks. It is/was operated by Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Syria. The U.S. Air Force Warfare Center at Nellis reports directly to the Air Combat Command. The center was founded on Sept. 1, 1966, as the U.S. Air Force Tactical Fighter Weapons Center. It was later renamed the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center in October 2005.
