Multi-piece memorial located in a plaza connected to a picnic area inside the Red Rock National Conservation Area on the western edge of Las Vegas. There are two larger identifiable items sur-rounded by smaller engraved rocks. The main piece is a large red rock with an engraving of an unfurled American flag, that reads, “Defending Freedom. It is wrong to mourn the death of men like these. Rather we should thank God that such men lived. George S. Patton. All Gave Some…Some Gave All.” A second larger piece reads, “In war, there are none left unwounded. Honoring our Post 9/11 Heroes and Celebrating Their Lives. September 11, 2001 – Forever.” Be-neath the engraving, there are depictions of U.S. military logos — U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard. Smaller boulders are engraved with names, ranks, and military services individual members of the armed forces were a part of — Nevada residents who died in combat since 9/11. A third boulder is engraved with the wording: “September 11th Memo-rial. This memorial is dedicated to the thousands of innocents who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It also honors those brave men and women who risked their lives in the rescue efforts. Friends of Red Rock Canyon, Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, the Bureau of Land Management, and Aquarius Stone Products worked together to create the nation’s first permanent memorial to commemorate this tragic event. This tribute to the victims and heroes was conceived on September 14, 2001, and was formally dedicated on September 29, 2001. There are also individual tiles purchased by families and friends of any individual (veteran or not) with messages of honor. This particular area is administered by the Friends of Red Rock Canyon for the Bureau of Land Management.

History:
The Defending Freedom Foundation and other concerned organizations sought permission from the Bureau of Land Management to install the memorial area. The group arranged for the boul-ders, and over several years organized numerous dedication ceremonies. However the organiza-tion may no longer be active, as ceremonies have not occurred for quite some time, and the group is no longer detailed on the web.
