Lest They Be Forgotten

boulder city, nv

Discription:

A chest-high monument with engraved lettering. On the top of the monument sits a metal sculpture that depicts a military boot with a rifle propped inside it and a military helmet resting at the top, or butt end, of the weapon. The sculpture symbolizes the makeshift memorial that surviving soldiers traditionally assemble in the field from the boots, rifle, and helmet of a colleague who dies in battle. The arrangement is also referred to as “Battlefield Cross” or “Battle Cross.” Behind the entire arrangement is a tall flag pole. The engraving reads, “Lest they be forgotten. Dedicated to the memory of Nevada’s fallen military heroes since September 11, 2001. In honor of their service and sacrifice in Afghanistan, Iraq, and wherever duty called. Veterans Day, November 11, 2007.” The names of 48 fallen militaries are included on the front of the memorial.

Responcible Organization/Individual:

In addition to the memorial itself, several feet away to the rear left of the memorial is a separate, small granite memorial that credits those who were responsible for Lest They Be Forgotten. It reads as follows: “Thank you to all the following for the erection of the monument. ‘Lest They Be Forgotten’ Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Century Steel, Ins., Diversified Concrete Cutting, Inv.; El Camino Construction Company, Inc., C&G Systems, Rinker Materials, T. Nickolas Co. Dedicated November 11, 2007.
