Adjacent to Carson City’s Riverview Park, an impressive collection of distinct individual memorials sitting on a small island within the parking area, individually identified as Korean War Memorial Park. The individual memorials are described as follows: (1) A brick pedestal topped with a life-size American eagle sculpture. An installed engraved metal plaque reads in part, “Northern Nevada Korean War Memorial. The last major action of the Korean War took place from 26-30 March 1953, in an area designated the Nevada Cities Complex. Four major hills, approximately 10 miles northeast of Panmunjom, Korea, were designated by U.S. Forces as Carson, Reno, Vegas, and Elko. Elements of the 120th Division, Communist Chinese Forces, 40th Army, launched an assault upon Combat outposts of the 5th Marine Division occupying the complex … The Marine defenders were credited with destroying an estimated 1,300 man regimental size unit of the enemy division … Marine losses were 118 killed, 801 wounded, and 98 miss in action.” (2) A large boulder surrounded by concrete blocks, with a nameplate that reads “VEGAS.” (3) A large boulder surrounded by concrete blocks and an engraved nameplate that reads ELKO. (4) A large boulder surrounded by concrete blocks and an engraved nameplate that reads “CARSON.” (5) A large boulder surrounded by concrete blocks and an engraved nameplate that reads “RENO.” (6) Four-sided pagoda-style monument made of concrete with plaques on each side. One includes wording in Korean and English, as follows: “Dedicated to the Nevada Korean War Veterans who served and gave their lives for freedom, peace and fought against invaders in Korea, Korean-American Association of Reno.” Another side features an illustration of a dove and the word ‘PEACE.’ A third side reads, “Freedom is not free” and includes engravings depicting the State of Nevada and the logo of the Korean War Veterans Association. The fourth side is engraved with the emblems of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. (7) A memorial walkway with red bricks containing the names of U.S. Korean War veterans and other veterans. Individuals can purchase bricks and have them engraved with the names of loved ones. (8) A stylized concrete marker engraved with the official emblem of the municipality of Carson City and the words, “Korean War Veterans Memorial Park.” The top of the marker is sculpted with a depiction of the snow-capped mountains of Korea. (9) Multi-colored signage with wording, “Korean War Veterans Carson City Chapter 305. For Further Information On The KWVA Please Call (775) 883-9088 or (775) 219-9991.”
The park has several benches for the comfort of visitors.

Each individual element was designed by the organization it represents. The overall Korean War Veterans Memorial Park island was designed adjacent to the city’s Riverview Park, a 109-acre open natural area extending from the memorial itself to the banks of the Carson River.

The last major action of the Korean War took place from 26-30 March 1953, in an area designated the Nevada Cities Complex. Four major hills, approximately 10 miles northeast of Panmunjom, Korea, were designated by U.S. Forces as Carson, Reno, Vegas, and Elko. The four rocks of the memorial are dedicated to the memory of the brave defenders of the Nevada Cities complex and to all veterans of the Korean Conflict.
