History:

Nellis AFB is home to many military memorials. The BTR-60 is the first vehicle in a series of Soviet-wheeled amphibious armored personnel carriers. It was developed in the late 1950s and was in production from 1959 to 1976. The vehicle saw combat in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, and in Chechnya and the Balkans. It has night vision capability. There are several variants of the chassis used for air defense, command vehicles, recovery vehicles or reconnaissance, and artillery spotting. It is armed with a 14.5mm heavy machine gun, a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, with a range of 500km. It is operated by more than 40 nations including Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lybia, North Korea, and Syria. The U.S. Air Force Warfare Center at Nellis reports directly to the Air Combat Command. The center was founded on Sept. 1, 1966, as the U.S. Air Force Tactical Fighter Weapons Center. It was later renamed the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center in October 2005. The Mission: The USAFWC conducts warfighter-centric live and virtual operational test and evaluation, tactics development, and advanced training to optimize Air Force capabilities and prepare airmen for joint, all domain combat operations.
