History:

Additional lettering on the plaque explains that Lincoln delivered the address on Nov. 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, an early national cemetery for the Civil War dead. Starting in 1909, a date coinciding with the centennial of Lincoln’s birth, tablets with the famed words were the first cast for installation in the country’s national cemeteries to assure that visitors never forget the honored dead and why they gave their lives. The veterans’ cemetery in Boulder City is not a national cemetery, but it follows similar protocol, and a Lincoln plaque was installed there.
