Hero Bio:
William J. Hurt, born at Paris, Tennessee, July 28, 1888. Entered the service from McGill, Nevada, June 1, 1918. Served in 47th Company, 12th Battalion, 166th Depot Brigade, Camp Lewis, Washington, to June 19, 1918; in Company K, 160th Infantry, 40th Division, to September 10, 1918; and in Company B, 127th Infantry, 32d Division, until his death.
Went overseas with the 40th Division of August 8, 1918. Made Private, First Class, July, 17, 1918. Served with the 32d Division when it entered the line in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive south of Cierges, September 30, 1918, at the capture of Cierges, October 1st, capture of Gesnes, October 5th, capture of Ramagne-sous-Montfaucon, October 14, and in the Bois de Bantheville, October 14th-19th. Killed in action in the Bois de Bantheville between Landres-et-St. Georges and Bantheville, October 19, 1918. Person notified of his death, John W. Hurt, father, R. F. D. No. 9, Paris, Tennessee. All efforts to communicate with relatives or acquaintances have failed. Private, First Class, Hurt’s name is on the Roll of Honor of White Pine County.
