Hero Bio:
Thomas Henry Edsall, son of Burroughs and Josephine Edsall, was born in Cripple Creek, Colorado, October 5, 1895. When eight years of age he moved with his parents to Reno, Nevada, where he was to spend the greater part of his life. There, too, he received his education, in the grades, in high school, and in the University of Nevada. During the winter of his sophomore year he passed the Rhodes Scholarship examination and would have gone to England but for the war. However, he expected go as soon as the war should be over and when affairs should have returned to normal. On the campus he was one of the most popular and promising of the students. He was a track man, class president and class debater, honor student, and member of the S. A. E. Fraternity. In July, 1917, he volunteered his services in the San Francisco Base Hospital Unit, No. 49, but was not called to the unit until in December.
At the time he was seriously ill in Mt. Zion Hospital, San Francisco, with sarcoma of the hip, and could not respond. On the 2d of January, 1918, he passed away, without having had a chance to see active service with his unit. He was buried in Reno on January 4th with full military honors. Besides his mother, who is now in Dansville, New York, he leaves a sister, Miss Charlotte Edsall. He had desired, more than anything else in the world, to serve his country actively, but the decision of a higher power, over which he had no control and which no one may question, had decreed events otherwise. Yet, Nevada honors the patriot for his unselfish offer and for the brave spirit in which he enlisted. His conduct was altogether worthy of a Golden Star in Nevada’s galaxy.
