Hero Bio:
Robert Freeman Hildebrand, son of Robert Berham and May Hildebrand, (mother deceased), was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on October 12, 1890. The family moved to Denver, Colorado, when Robert was five years old, later moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they lived for three years. From there they went to Ely, and it was there that Robert grew to manhood. In civilian life he followed the occupation of stationary engineer. At the time of his entrance into the service, August 26, 1918, he was working for the Brace & Hergert Mill Company, Seattle, Washington. And when his call to the colors reached him he left there for Camp Lewis, Washington.
He was assigned to Company A, 13th Supply Train, and while following his duties of Supply Sergeant he was stricken with influenza and died on October 20, 1918. His wife’s death occurred soon after his own. A daughter, Melva Hildebrand, survives, who can point with pride to her “soldier daddy’s” war record. She resides at the Belvedere Apts., Salt Lake City, Utah. Besides his daughter, he is survived by his father, Robert Burns Hildebrand, 666 East 2nd South, Salt Lake City, Utah; and by the following sisters, Mrs. J. H. Carroll, 3 Block Y, Pueblo, Colorado; Mrs. H. V. Evans, East Ely, Nevada; Mrs. F.C. Nunnelly, Belvedere Apartments, Salt Lake City, Utah; Louise Hildebrand, 666 East 2nd South, Salt Lake City, Utah; and, a brother, David Burns Hildebrand of Salt Lake City, Utah.
