Hero Bio:
John T. Sayer was born in Rigby, Idaho, October 14th, 1888. He entered the service from Elko, Nevada, June 15, 1918. Served in the 15th Company, 4th Battalion, 166th Depot Brigade, Camp Lewis, Washington, to July 15, 1918; in Company L, 160th Infantry, 40th Division, to September 20, 1918; and in Company F, 309th Infantry, 78th Division, to the time of his death. He went overseas with the 40th Division on August 8, 1918.
On October 16th, 1918, the 78th Division went into the Meuse-Argonne fight at a point near Grand Pre. After furious fighting the division found itself in line from north of Grand Pre to a point south of Champigneulle, October 19th, 1918. Private John T. Sayer was killed in action that day. All efforts to get in touch with his relatives or acquaintances have failed. The person notified of his death was John S. Sayer, father, Prairie, Idaho. The soldier’s name is on the Elko County Honor Roll.
