Hero Bio:

Harry Johnson was born in Sheridan, Indiana, March 26, 1891. His parents died when he was a child, and having no other relatives, he set out to shift for himself. During his life he followed many trades in various states. Being of clean habits and a good worker, he was never at a loss for work. In Nevada he lived at Battle Mountain, in Lander County, where he registered, and which was given credit for his service. He was married on the 2d of August, 1917, and for a few months lived happily with his bride. Then the call came, taking him from the home life he loved so well, but the young couple made no claim for exemption. He joined the colors on April 26th, 1918, and left for Camp Lewis, Washington.

At this post he served in the 12th Company, 3d Battalion, 166th Depot Brigade, until May 24th, then transferred to Company C, 361st Infantry, 91st Division. On July 6th, he went overseas with this regiment. The 91st was moved into the St. Mihiel region in September as a reserve for the divisions in the line. On September 26th the division jumped off with the line of battle in the Argonne. They advanced through the Bois de Cheppy and up the heights to Epinonville. On the 28th they left Epinonville behind them, captured Eclisfontaine, and reached a line east of Exermont. It was a noble advance, but it cost the 91st heavily, and among those who were left on the field after the position had been taken was Private Harry Johnson of the 361st. (September 28th, 1918.) Private Johnson is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery. He leaves his widow to mourn the fate which made necessary his taking. She is Mrs. Jeanette I. Johnson, Box 455, Station C., Los Angeles, California. As she has so proudly said of her brave young husband: “He was a good true American.”
