Hero Bio:
Charles David McNamee was born November 24th, 1896, at Reno, Nevada. He spent the greater part of his life in that city, attending school, three years of which were in the Reno High School, and engaging in business. Before entering the army, he was interested in what was known as the Independent Ice Company. On September 18th, 1917, he went to Camp Lewis, Washington, but was unable to continue long in the service owing to physical disability. Accordingly he was discharged for that reason in November, 1917. The following year, October 3d, 1918, he again entered the service from Reno, going this time to Fort Logan, Colorado. But before he could be assigned to a definite organization, he was taken ill with pneumonia, and died at the camp on the 17th of the same month.
Mr. C. Gulling of Reno, at whose home Charles McNamee lived for two years, speaks of the soldier as “an exemplary young man” and states that “had he used his privilege of exemption, he would not have been required to go to war; but he always had contempt for the one who would use an excuse to avoid his country’s call.” The brave lad left a father, Frank McNamee, of Standish, California, a sister, Mrs. J. A. Jones, Johnstonville, California; and a brother, Wirt McNamee of Standish, California.
