Hero Bio:

Corporal Bill Margeas was born in Luca, Greece, October 25, 1889. He was a son of John and Anastasis Margeas of that place. While residing at Ely, Nevada, he entered the service of his adopted country (November 4, 1917). He served in the 37th Company, 166th Depot Brigade, Camp Lewis, Washington, to November 10, 1917; in Headquarters Company, 164th Infantry, 41st Division, to January 11, 1918; in Company G., 164th Infantry, to January 12, 1918; and in Company G, 164th Infantry, to January 12, 1918; and in company D. 26th Infantry, 1st Division, until his death.

He went overseas December 15, 1917, with the 41st Division, was made a Private, First Class, February 1, 1918, and a Corporal July 27, 1918. With the 1st Division he served in the front line trenches in the Toul Sector from January 18th to April 2nd, 1918; in the front line of the Montdidier Sector from April 25 to May 28, 1918; in the Battle of Cantigny and enemy counter-offensive following, May 28 to July 7, 1918; in the Battle of Brezy-le-Sec, during the great Allied Counter Offensive, July 18-22, 1918; in the front line trenches of the Toul Sector from August 7 to August 24, 1918; in the Battle of St. Mihiel, September 12-13, 1918; and in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive from October 1st to October 12th, 1918, the last day of which he was killed in action near Sommerance. A brother, Peter Margeas, of McGill, Nevada, survives him. Corporal Margeas’ name is on the Honor Roll of White Pine County.
